I was promised more hours when I started and for months and finally got told they couldnt give them all along. The company gives you no benefits e.g. No one but full timers get a bonus, no Christmas party or present and you get paid below minimum wage. The company is more focused on you selling products than actually doing makeup and inspiring each other. Management isn’t great, they would go out for hours on “meetings” when they were actually caught by staff out shopping.
Myself and other staff were lied to continuously. I actually loved my time working for Mac, but there was no opportunities for advancing and growing in the business - which i was told there was. I felt as if I was constantly fighting an uphill battle.
Management was very uncoordinated - not from store level but above store level which also left us floundering at times. Higher management don't have a grasp on what the artists need and what the customer wants either, so they try to make you role out these 'amazing' new sales ideas when all they should be doing is creating the product that every other brand has had for years. But, if it wasn't for the girls and boys I worked with I would have left long before. It would normally be quite busy as I worked in Central London but it was normally a very good environment to work.
Working at MAC taught me a great number of skills. It was a great to progress and branch out into different areas of the company when you put your mind to it, however due to the redundancies were seeing that there is now a pause in our careers and there is no indication of progression any time soon. You may have appointments or just generally serve customers who approach the counter then investigate what their needs are and tailor the service to them. Recommending the correct products and giving the best customers service is expected and so is working with a smile. They play their own but current music which gives a good atmosphere.
The hardest part of the job is sometimes lack of communication between management and the retail artists and lack of staff when busy. Most enjoyable part of the job is being encouraged to be a makeup artist, meeting new customers who are also interested in makeup and the company and working with the friendly staff. I worked at MAC in London and Birmingham for 3 years, and overall I loved working for the brand. Amazing discount and perks of learning from other make-up artists. If you are already an artist and want to build your kit and improve your skill, then definitely apply for to do just that. The family vybe within the brand is also overwhelming and I made friends for life within my team.
Job role includes cleaning and stocking the store, working on the till, designing face charts for looks depending on your title, applying make-up to customers to demo products but also working towards certifications such as make-up appointments. Sometimes management aren't great but that's like any place I suppose. Long hours are optional but weekend and evening availability is usually a must. Also I would say that as of late, MAC doesn't seem to value their staff as much as they used to.
Management and higher management / some trainers (most trainers are good) are extremely close minded, do not like it when people do better than them and power trip anyone because they have nothing better to do with their life. When I told head office that I was being bullied ( and a few more members ) by the store manager, absolutely NOTHING was done about it. They don't care as long as she made the targets that's all that matters.
