According to all the materials provided to AASPs, replacing the battery requires replacement of the top case assembly and under no circumstances should it be attempted to separate or remove the battery from the top case. That said, the cost of replacing the top case assembly (as a part) is significantly more expensive than the replacement fee being promoted (which I have to admit, I only found out about today), unless Apple are subsidizing the cost; but why would they eat the cost on a consumable part. Your old topcase would be sent back to possibly be refurbished and become someone else's replacement, at least that's my guess. Worst case it gets seperated into battery and aluminum shell and both are recycled (which for the aluminum at least should make Apple some money).
